Selection of clients for White Cross Support Dogs is a three part process.
The first part is focused primarily on getting the paperwork in order:
-
- medical status of client in full, certified by a physician
- medical status of dog to be entered into the training programme by veterinarian
- financial status of client or caretakers in full (for the past three years) to ascertain that proper handling and care of the support dog is guaranteed
The second part is the practical assessment of the clients needs and outlook on life with or without the support dog.
-
- is the client able to train and handle the dog
- will the client benefit and be emancipated by adding a support dog
- how will the client cope with changes in the dog’s attitude and support provided as the dog is a living being and not a machine
The third part is the hands-on assessment of the clients’ owned dog, where we will gage:
-
- temperament
- trainability
- will to please
When all these assessments provide a situation where training of the support dog will lead to emancipation of the client and a perfect working couple WCSD will start the actual training programme.
If you are interested in entering yourself or a relative and a dog into the programme please contact info@wcsd.co.uk for further info.
